French Fishing Boats Detained in Javea

The European Union ordered French fishing boats to jettison 30,000 euros worth of fish in Javea this week.

The crews were informed that they had started to fish two weeks before the official season begins and consequently were in breach of EU laws.

Some 4 tonnes of dead tuna caught off the coast of Formentera had to be thrown back into the sea.

The fishermen say that when the directive indicating that the season was being put back because of the fuel strike , they had already caught their fish. This does not make sense said one sailor.

On Thursday the Eu ordered the Spanish fishing ministry to let the boats unload their cargo into the harbour.
