A quarry near Casarabanela used to be owned by a British company and when they closed it down a promise was made that it would not be opened again .

The quarry is situated in a woodland which is protected by UNESCO near the Sierra de Nieves national park .

The local mayor is now wanting to give out a contract for the quarry to re-open and local residents are up in arms about it .

The mayor says that he is powerless and that this company will sue the town hall if they cannot start mining again . The mayor says that they do not have the financial resources to fight a legal battle .

The group who is fighting this say that they will go to the European Court with their case .
