A car caught fire on Saturday morning in the San Juan tunnel near Alicante . The tunnel was closed for about 45 minutes while fire crews put out the blaze , which was isolated to the engine of the car .

It seems that the driver of a people carrier noticed smoke being emitted from his engine and pulled over to the side of the tunnel about 300 metres from the exit .

Other drivers seeing the large quantity of smoke panicked and started to reverse out of the tunnel , causing havoc .

There were no injuries from the incident but it did cause traffic problems for the rest of the morning .
