The ruling council in Benitaxell has put out a statement to explain why they have had to raise the local rates so substantially .
It appears that they were left a large bill from the previous administration and also the previous administration had awarded a large pay rise for public sector workers which they then had to fund .
Central government wanted surveys to be completed on a variety of issues and these all costed extra money .
The public swimming pool which was built last year to obtain a goverment grant had been out of action and so that also needed money to make it available to the public .
Add to all of this the crisis in the building industry with reduced income from licenses then their income was over a million euros in shortfall.
The council has apologised for the lack of communication about the increases and has asked SUMA to do surveys of all properties to ensure fair payments in the future .
They are also permitting bills of over 600 euros to be paid in instalments .
