The high court judge investigating and compiling a record of firing squad victims during the Civil War and also those who disappeared or were buried in mass graves , has been asked to investigate the concentration camp at Albatera.
Albatera is an inland town near Orihuela on the road between Alicante and Murcia and during the Civil War it is possible that up to 5000 people from all over Spain were shot there .
The commission for the recovery of historical memory is also asking to investigate the cemetries of Orihuela and Alicante where more victims of Franco’s reprisals are buried .
At the moment the investigations are dependent on survivors remembering where people could be buried .
This is a very positive step towards a recognition of what happened at that time .
