Last week the government announced that there were now many fewer undocumented migrants arriving by sea into the Canary Islands.At the moment there are only 180 people in the detention centres while in the most difficult times of 2006 there were 10,000 in the centre .At the moment the figures show that 5000 fewer are turning up on the shores of Spain .
These figures were announced at a press meeting to provide a review of the year .
Zapatero said that he feels the battle against illegal immigration is being won but he feels that you can never lower the guard against it .
Many of the young Africans who attempt the perilous crossing often die in the attempt .
Other avenues of entry are by air from South America or from Eastern Europe by road .
