The campaign to get people onto the streets in an effort to get the regional and national governments to listen to the people of Orihuela has paid off .
Almost 12,000 people turned up to walk throught he streets of the town . The mayor of the town led the procession and the president of the chamber of commerce read a manifesto in front of the town hall highlighting the environmental damage that will be done in the name of progress .He also maintained that the quality of life of the local people will be adversly affected .
They all want a route change and for the train to go through an underground tunnel . The mayor has suggested ways in which the costs could be met . However both Alicante and Murcia want the project to be completed as quickly as possible .
The train link will cut the communication between Murcia and Madrid to about two hours 15 minutes .
In Orihuela under the present plans the train will split part of the city into two sectors and the noise and pollution will make residents lives a living hell .
