The regional government has opened a special unit attached to the hospital in Orihuela to treat young people who require care for behavioural conditions .
This new mental health unit is for infants through to adolescents and it has already admitted 64 patients in its first year .
There has been a unit for many years but it is only in the last year that it has been able to treat young people .It is the only unit in the area for specifically treating psychiatric patients below the age of 18 .
It is specifically designed to enable doctors to observe young people with emotional and behavioural disorders .
Many of the conditions being suffered are difficult to treat as outpatients .There are eight beds in the unit and also a multi -purpose room for therapy ,exercise , dining ,teaching and family visits .
The young people also have access to a garden and a basketball court .
