The mayor of Orihuela claims that 15,000 people turned out for the peaceful protest against the AVE high speed train travelling through Orihuela . The police say that the number was closer to 10,000 , whatever the number a lot of people did turn out .

The mayor of Orihuela is asking that plans for the train be changed so that the lines traverse the town with a 1.5 kilometre stretch going underground , a move that many people agree with .

People from many other towns also came to the march . There was the provincial   president plus the mayors of Granja de Rocomore , Cox , Callosa and Beniel .Many fear that the march will have no effect as these decisions were taken a while ago.The mayor now wants to meet with the governments Ministry of Public Works and hopes that they will at long last listen to the voice of the people of Orihuela .

The mayor feels that it is not just a matter of money but a lack of political will on the part of the government and she is hoping that a dialogue can be set up to look at the issues in depth .
