Near a town called Arcos de la Frontera in Andalucia there is a vineyard making a red wine which is causing quite a stir in wine circles .It is one of the most unusual wines being made in Andalucia at the moment .The owner of the vineyard is Vicente Taberner and he is from Valencia .The vineyard buildings have a very Roman country villa feel and that it appears was a quite deliberate strategy as they actually discovered the remains of a Roman villa when they were preparing the vineyard in 2000.They have even asked the local archaeological museum to excavate the remains but they do not have the money to do so at the moment .They have been advised to leave well alone until it can be excavated and so the vines are planted around it .
Taberner has a very good business importing Spanish wines into Germany and lives in Frankfurt for three quarters of his month .Travelling to Andalucia to supervise the work there .Choosing andalucia to grow vines for a superlative wine is a gamble but this man has travelled the length and breadth of Spain and has chosen this spot .He has already produced a 2005 vintage which has acquired high acclaim and he maintains that the 2006 will be even better .An American wine writer has acclaimed the 2005 as as good as the best of the Northern Rhones .
This is a man possessed with the idea of turning this part of Spain , near the Costa de la Luz into one of the top wine producing places in the world .
