The Valencia region is about to adopt a student ID system which is eventually expected to be adopted by the rest of Spain .As from september all schoolchildrenin the Valencia region will be issued with a number called an NIA ( Numerode Identificacion del Alumno) Students beginning school for the first time will also be issued wsith a new type of card which will carry the new number as well as their academic history .Those children already in full time education will just be given the number.

The reason for having the number is to allow education authorities to gain easy access to student records especially when they are about to change schools .The system is already in operation in Madrid .Oncew a student has been issued with a number it cannot be changed .The cards will alsocontain information on a child’s behaviour , how many times they have attended school or sometimes truanting from certain classes .
