Researchers have been analysing data from 37 of the airports to be found in Spain and the report which has come about as a result of the research has said that in general Spanish airports are ineficient economically. They reckon that it is due to excessive decentralisation of the airports .The Basque counry has three airports and is close to two more in Santander and Pamplona .In fact the region has more airports per square kilometre than any other region in Spain. The suggestion is that there should be only one airport which would have more connections and be more economically efficient.
They are suggesting the redirection of airport policy once again reducing the number and giving a better service .Galicia is another example of a region with three airports. The reverse would be true of the Balearic Islands and the Canaries where the report feels that they need more airports because of their reliance on them for trade and tourism.
Cordoba,Murcia and Vitoria were singled out as being particularly inefficient .It appears that proper economies of scale cannot be achieved with the sizes of some Spanish airports.Production could be higher and costs less if the airports were larger , had more planes in and out and carried therefore more cargo and passengers .
