Costa Blanca Jellyfish

Jellyfish can ruin a seaside holiday and last year on the Costa Blanca they were a real nuisance. The Red Cross were inundated with people suffering from stings ,which are very painful. This year six fishing trawlers are going to be used down the Costa Blanca ,equipped with special nets. They will be on call through the summer to catch the jellyfish should they threaten beaches.

The six boats are from Villajoyosa,Benidorm,Calpe and Santa Pola. They have been seconded by the Provincial Federation of Fishermen’s Guilds .The boats have all been kitted out and will be ready to go as soon as they receive a call. There are more than 200 volunteer jellyfish watchers  on the lookout for these sea creatures .

On the Mar Menor there is a 25 mile long net across the opening into the inland sea and this will protect swimmers from being stung this summer. The net is especially designed to keep the jellyfish away and is scheduled to be put in place this month .It seems that the jellyfish population has reduced during the last three years .Three species live in the Mar Menor and two are harmless .This is difficult to believe as all jellyfish are carnivorous and kill their prey by stinging.
