The Spanish birthrate is at its highest since 1990 when it was 1.36 children per woman.The current rate is 1.46 children per woman.The National Institute of Statistics registered 518,967 births in 2008 ,26,440 more than the previous year.
One in five children is born to foreign mothers ,representing 15% more than in 2007.There were also 593 more deaths in 2007 ,but even so the overall death rate has fallen to 8.47% .
The number of weddings has fallen by 8159,with 196613 weddings and of these 3549 were same sex marriages ,2299 between men and 1250 between women.The number of weddings where one or both of the people were not Spanish was 37497 and of these 44.4% were foreign women with Spanish men ;29.8 % were Spanish women with foreign men;and 21.6% where neither were Spanish.
The most marriages were held in Melilla,Cueta and Cantabria. Autonomous regions which grew the most were Madrid,Andalucia and Cataluna.The population has fallen in Galicia ,Castilla y Leon and Asturias .
