The Selectividad examinations have just been sat by over 200,000 students in Spain.This Spanish system is due to end next year when a new system will be introduced in 2010.Hundreds of thousands of Spanish students have tried the present system since 1990.In 2008 over 89% of those who attempted the exams actually passed them The marks are based on an averaging of what the student achieves in Spanish language,History ,Philosophy and English.These are common to all students.Then they also study another three subjects of their choice ,depending on what they hope to do in a future career.For the final result ,40% will depend on work obtained in these exams,while the remaining 60% will be based on the students’ marks during the two years that they have spent in school.High marks are required for careers such as medicine ,law etc.Students do have mark deducted for grammar mistakes,spelling mistakes,poor punctuation and untidy presentation

During the year 2009-10 it is known that university enrolment fees will rise and that the number of first year places will increase.
