Protecting The Almeria Coastline

Many environmental groups are calling into question the true philosophy of the Junta de Andalucia over the proposed demolition of the Algorrobico hotel. The hotel is built in a nature park and also invades the 100m Ley de Costa rule about being to close to the shoreline. Its construction was halted by a judge in February 2006 and it has been the subject of controversy ever since.

The government appears to have shelved plans to buy back the land on which the hotel is built much to the chagrin of environmental groups. The Junta has decided that the cost would be prohibitive. In 2006 the government had argued that the hotel was not incompatible with the town plan but the judge put paid to that with his ruling.

In March this year a public prosecuter ruled that public administrations could not be prosecuted and that is what may have changed the attitude of the Junta.Environmentalists see this as another U-turn in an attempt not to demolish the hotel.A spokesperson for Salvemos Mojacar says that they are acting as though the building license has not been revoked. He went on to say that they will demolish the homes of innocent householders where the environmental impact is small and will do nothing about the really important things.
