The Mayor of Elche, near Alicante ,did not fund party electoral publicity from public funds. This was the verdict of the Provincial Court and all charges have been dropped. It was alleged that the PSOE Mayor had used public funds to pay for the PSOE electoral campaign.Consequently he was under investigation for corruption and possible misuse of public funds. The case was brought against him by the PP party which also sought to expand the case to incluse more invoices.
The Mayor spoke to the press and said that justice had been done. However the PSOE did admit to making an administrative error and repaid 6000 euros. The judgement ruled that the Mayor had signed the invoices but as one had already been signed in 2007 he would not have put his name to another if he had intended to deceive.
A parallel case against the ex-treasury councillor Maria Angeles Aviles has not yet been resolved.A statement from the Town Hall has criticised the PP for making these allegations and bringing the name of the town into disrepute. All of that in the name of gaining power. The PSOE has challenged the PP councillors to publish their own personal accounts.
Even though the Mayor was cleared the PP still called for his resignation. They feel that the Mayor did have an irregularity in the signing of the public money invoices and should be called to account for that.
