Another landmark has been completed in Torrevieja.This time it is a beautiful church.The church will be known as the Church of the Sacred Heart and last week was the opening ceremony by the president of the Valencia Community Sr Francisco Camps.The church is situated in the Plaza de Oriente.Hundreds of spectators greeted the president as he made a tour of the church,church hall and the underground parking area..

During the inauguration speech Sr Camps praised Torrevieja as a town which is a model of coexistence, an attitude which has made it the ” capital of the heart of Europe’.He continued with this theme of the importance of integration and coexistence.

The Mayor spoke of the character of the people of Torrevieja,their enthusiasm and their desire to share and live with people from other countries ,cultures and often different ways of thinking.This attitude he felt had made Torrevieja one of the fastest growing and most multi-cultural places in the whole of Europe.

The redevelopment of the Plaza Oriente with the new church ,has brought a new dimension to the town.The church is already being called the Cathedral of La Punta,named after the district in which it is located.

After the inauguration there was a mass ,a procession went through the streets in honour of the patron saint of La Punta,the sacred Heart of Jesus ,the day ended with fireworks and a street party .
