The Customs Agency and the National Police Organised Crime Unit in Murcia have broken an international drug smuggling ring which was bringing large quantities of cocaine into the country. They have discovered 900 kilos of cocaine stashed inside crates of pineapples and casavas which were being shipped from Ecuador to Spain. The first container was intercepted coming in to Murciaon June 16.This one contained 600 kils.Later in the month a second container going in to Algeciras ,Gibralter had 300 kilos of the drug.Eight people have been arrested in connection with the drugs. The police discovered firearms plus almost half a million in cash. There were also six high performance cars and a motorbike.
The investigation into this case began last December when the customs and police discovered that they were using fruit containers as cover. It was established that Murcia was the base for one of these companies and the links went back to the same supplier in Ecuador. They were then able to identify those who were supplying the drugs to Spain. They then intercepted the containers from the company and discovered the cylinders of cocaine amongst the fruit.Later in the month they targeted a second container and discovered their second haul.
