More than 150 residents of the La Regia urbanisation in Orihuela Costa demonstrated on the N-332 road in front of their urbanisation last week.The demonstration brought traffic to a halt and disrupted work on the widening of the road.There is no objection to the widening but there is an objection to the fact that they are unable to cross the road in safety to access the chemist ,medical centre and the beach.They want a footbridge to be erected for them.
Many of those living on the urbanisation are pensioners or have young families and now they have to walk 2kilometres to cross the road and access these facilities.The authorities have put in a footbridge but it does not benefit the residents of La Regia.
The protestors carried placards,blew whistles and genrally made themselves heard.They also presented a petition to the town hall a month ago to ask for a safe pedestrian crossing.It seems that it is the public works ministry which is carrying out the work and the town hall has no jurisdiction over the work .However it has brought about a meeting next week to try and find a solution to the issue.The road widening project will continue into August at least.
