Galveston in Texas USA was founded by a man from Andalucia .His name was Bernado de Galvez and his home village of Macharaviaya celebrated July 4 in style this year.The village welcomed hundreds of visitors to the historic event.
The opening speech was given by the Minister of Culture for the Junta de Andalucia ,Rosa Torres ,who highlighted the career of the local man and his contribution to American independence .Many guests attended the ceremony ,including the Malaga chapter of the America Club.American and Spanish flags were raised and members of the Torijos 1831 Club ,dressed in historic costumes, re-enacted the entry of the French into their village in 1808.
After the official ceremony the guests watched a documentry film about the Galvez family.They also drank a drink called hidromiel which Spanish settlers arriving in “New Spain ” traditionally drank.It is a drink of fermented honey.
