Until the end of August the world famous “Bous de la Mar “fiesta will take place in Denia.This has become a vry contraversial affair and the residents of Denia are divided as to whether the event is just a harmless bit of fun or whether it is actually cruelty to the animals.The fiesta has been running for 16 years .
A bull is released into an area by the side of the port and spectators jump into the ring and wave their T-shirts at him to cause him to chase them .Usually the spectators have to jump into the sea to escape the bull but there are many occasions when it is the bull which does so .Lifeboats are there waiting to rescue the animals ,towing them back to dry land .The poor animals must be terrified by it all and yet it is seen as entertainment.
The animals are not killed or maimed in any way but the question is whether it is humane for animals to be taunted in this way .They are either being made angry or they are being forced into a very alien environment.The “festivities ” begin at 7pm each evening.
