A Benidorm (Costa Blanca ) taxi driver had picked up a fare in Murcia and ended up being stabbed in the neck and thrown out of his taxi.This happened in the early hours of the morning .The attacker took the taxi and began to follow a British couple driving north.They became aware of being followed and turned into the car park of the Vega Baja hospital.They asked the security guard for help and he alerted the Guardia Civil from Jacarilla and Guardamar de Segura who were able to find the taxi as it had been caught on security cameras in the hospital.They eventually stopped the taxi and arrested the driver .The suspect is a 32 year old Russian.
The regional taxi drivers association has condemned the attack .The driver is still recovering from his injuries in hospital.In 1997 another taxi driver was stabbed in the throat and died from his injuries.His killer has never been discovered.Taxi drivers are now calling for the design of taxis to be changed so that there are screens between the passengers and drivers.They also want GPS detection systems and other security measures and for these modifications to be subsidised by the government.
The taxi drivers regional confederation has signed an agreement with the regional government for all taxis to have a priority connection to the 112 emergency services.
