Soon there will be a September Centenarian in Benidorm and last week there was another Centenarian in Calpe. In Benidorm it is a British man who will soon turn 100 and in Calpe it is a Swiss lady who has just celebrated hir 100th birthday. There must be something special about the Costa Blanca.Ana Borg has lived in Calpe for 38 years and has been a resident at the Solymar retirement home since she was 95.Her birthday was marked by the council presenting her with a special plaque and a large bouquet.
This is a lady who s still very aware of what is happening in her life and has a very good memory. This is a centenarian who speaks five languages,German,Swiss,English,Spanish and French.Sadly this lady has no family and has never had children ,her “home” is made in Solymar by all of the people who live there.
Ana loves Calpe ,just as Tommy loves Benidorm. She particularly likes the old town of Calpe. Many people living in these retirement homes have nobody but the other residents and the staff who care for them. These are people who are extremely vulnerable for a variety of reasons.Too many words have been written about the institutional abuse of the elderly in care homes, hospitals and the like. One day maybe there will be a law passed which will set out very clearly the guidelines for protecting the old and equally set out just what will happen to those found guilty of their neglect, theft from them, psychological abuse and physical abuse, just as their are laws to protect the young.
