A British expat, living in Benidorm, is just about to reach his 100th birthday in Benidorm. He was born in September 1909 and saw two world wars pass him by.He lost an arm just before the beginning of World War II in an accident associated with his job. This did not act as a deterrant to this gentleman and he and his wife and daughter became guesthouse owners near Blackpool. This was at the time of food rationing and consequently guests had to provide their ration books if they wanted to be fed.
During this time Tommy’s wife started to go to Spain for her holidays but Tommy would never go as he didn’t like flying. It was not until 1980 that his daughter persuaded him to travel to Benidorm .That was the beginning of a love affair with the town and very quickly they sold their guest house and moved to La Cala to live permanently. Then they made a move into the town centre into a flat with lovely views of the sea.
Five years ago Tommy broke his pelvis in a fall and needed more care but he would not move back to England. He said that he had lost his passport. To many there is no doubt in their minds that the wonderful climate of Spain contributes to the quality of life of plder people and consequently to their longevity too.
