The Spanish electricity market in Spain has been deregulated it seems,in line with European directives. From July 2009 it seems we can all choose who to purchase our electricity from. This might be a wonderful thing to do if anyone actually knew how to do it .Most people have had no useful information and would not know where to begin.
Another drawback to most of the utility systems in Spain is that the language used in their written communications are so archaic that poor expats find it very difficult to translate them.Of course the same applies to official communications in the UK where the “man in the street”will find it almost impossible to decipher certain official communications .
It seems that it is almost impossible to find out whether it will be worth changing your electricity provider as no one is able to discover information about their tariffs. So far neither Endesa ,Iberdrola or E.On have issued any information to help people. In fact it would be really great to actually receive a bill from Iberdrola and know what we have to pay them each month after asking and asking to be “billed’ there is no joy. When you speak to people about the issues they are more than likely at some “call centre ” in South America. The people who man these centres may speak English but their understanding of the language is cursory and they rarely actually do what they promise they will do .
There is also the issue of there being a “government approved “price which it seems will be quite high in order to make the prices of the deregulated companies seem good value. Can that be a moral stance for any government to take?It would be interesting to speak wih just one person who has actually changed their electricity supplier.
