According to the Oxford University Press Spain and the Spanish are at the tail end of Europe for speaking other languages. The European average for being able to hold a conversation in another language is 44%of the population. In Spain ,according to the OUP it is only 20%.
Words such as “sandwich” and “nuggets” have been accepted into the Spanish language but when a Spaniard wants to hold a conversation i English then it can often turn into Spanglish.
The OUP has created a website www.100spanglish.es where it is possible to view videos and to practice English with the objective of avoiding the pitfalls. They give examples such as “I am very preoccupated”.In the videos there are well known Spaniards such as Zapatero and Aznar speaking in English which is far from correct.Users can vote for the most amusing conversations.
