There is a fear in Alicante that those companies which manufacture plastic carrier bags will need to make redundancies in their factories if the “crusade “to replace them with other fabrics continues.Plastic manufacturers say that there could be hundreds of job losses if this philosophy reigns.
The government wants to cut use of plastic carrier bags by half over the course of the next year and an agreement has already been set up with carrefour to slowly phase them out.There are 40 companies on the Costa Blanca which currently manufacture such bags.The Provincial Plastics Association of Alicante(APPA)estimates that 20 small or medium sized businesses would be forced to close,leading to 600 families being affected by job losses.They say that polythene bags are 100% recyclable.They say that the problemis a lack of education and not pollution.Workers in the industry are very worried.
