It seems that the Costa Blanca is rife with STD’s( sexually transmitted diseases).Health authorities have reported that this type of infection is higher now than it was 20 years ago.The clinics which deal with this type of infection mostly are in Torrevieja,Orihuela,Elche and Alicante City.
Infections such as syphylis and gonorrhoea which were thought to have been eradicated a few years ago ,have made a dramatic come-back.The medical profession thinks that the public has almost lost its fear of AIDS and that unprotected sex and promiscuity are becoming accepted by society.
Hospital staff have reported increasing numbers of papiloma, herpes, hepatitisB and other vaginal infections. The number of people who are testing positive for AIDS is also increasing..In the province of Alicante around 30 new cases of gonorrhoea and syphilis is treated.Yet 6 years ago there were only 41 cases reported on the whole of the Costa Blanca,a total of 2.75 cases per 100,000 population.,consistent with the national average. These figures have quadrupled since 2003 with 153 people being treated in the last year. This translates to 8.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
The governments of most countries see educating the public as the best way forward but when young people have sexual images thrown in their faces in most television dramas and films then it is little wonder that they begin to feel that they are invincible and that it will never happen to them.
