Javea’s Car Parking Problem

Javea has two large underground car parks which residents and tourists do not use. They were constructed at great cost .The Ecisa company spent 21 million euros to build the facilities.

The reasons why people don’t use them can be two fold. Many do not like using underground car parking facilities because they feel vulnerable, particularly women,of whatever age, who are on their own in a car or women with young children ,it is stressful unless there is a good security system in place.

Another reason for not using them is cost .If these companies are charging a lot of money then people would prefer to walk than pay.In Calpe there is an underground car-park which is free of charge and it is always full to capacity.

Opposition parties are now demanding that the mayor faces up to the issues and finds a solution to the problem. If they placed the market back where it belongs then they might have one day when the facilities would be full at least.

When the schemes went forward for consideration about 4 years ago a team of consultants delivered a favourable report on the viability of these car parks and it seems that they got it very wrong.
