The Valencia government has recognised the Almoradi Holy Week celebrations as a regional event of interest for tourism. This Semana Santa is steeped in local history and there is evidence of the first guilds and brotherhoods in documents and chronicles of clerical visits throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The brotherhoods have been growing since they were restructured after the Civil War.
In 1976 the “Junta Mayor de Hermanadades y Cofradias de la Semana santa de Almoradi” was formed and takes a very active role in social projects. The procession begins on the evening of Domingo de Ramos, carrying the Virgen de los Dolores, until the Domingo de Resurreccion,in which they all take part.
There are naturally many religious and socio-cultural events but one focus is the “El Mesias”,a portrayal of the sacramental decree. The government sees this piece of history as important for tourism in that it portrays part of Valencian history.
