There are 98 sites worldwide on the list for a need for preservation and six are Spanish.The World Monuments Fund issued its biennial review of endangered architectural and cultural heritage sites which are selected by an international panel of experts.Sevilla is included and it is the pressure of development which is cited as the pressure there.there are plans for a huge tower block which in the view of the panel will ruin the vista of the city.This tower block which is already under construction has been criticised by environmental groups.
The New York based group is also concerned aout the skyline of Toledo where it says that developments along the River Tagus severely threatens the landscape.Numancia ,Barcelona ,Soria and Avila are also under threat from new constructions which encroach on the historic streets,altering them for ever.
On the way to Santiago de Compostella the construction of a new highway will also cause irrearable physical and scenic destruction.Part of the fabled route has already been destroyed.In Barcelona Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Familia could be seriously damaged by the construction of an underground rail tunnel .The vibrations could affect it after construction,but the construction itself could also be detrimental.
Up to now 630 sites throughout the world,in 125 different countries have been included in the lists compiled by the group.
