The residents of Denia were not too happy to discover that 325,000 euros of the Plan E funds from central government were spent on planting palm trees.The money was from the central government’s crisis fund ,helping towns all over Spain to overcome the economic crisis by keeping people working and so spending money.

However instead of creating jobs this money has been spent on the purchase of 139 trees which will be planted on the Ondara -Denia road.Of course people have to plant them and planting such large trees takes a long time.In total 2 million euros is being spent on giving this road a facelift.

Each tree will have two lights at its base.This will use a great deal of electricity which the tax payer will pay for in the end.Residents are saying that this use of excessive electricity will be similar to the entrance to Pego ,an entrance to the town which has been called “the landing strip”.It can be seen from many miles away and is a serious example of light pollution.Residents feel that this 2 million euros would have been better spent on other forms of infrastructure such as drains.However councils like their spending to be “seen”.Residents prefer things “to work”.
