Javea Fiestas

The mid-summer fiestas in Javea are giving some cause for concern on a number of levels. The fiesta runs for two weeks and it culminates in the bonfire parties on the eve of mid-summer.Parents,schools and authorities are now concerned that this is one of the busiest times for students and schools. There are end of term tests, exams and university entrance exams. These fiestas mean that many of the young people do not give their studies all of the attention that they need.It is being proposed that the fiesta actually begins with the bonfires on the eve of the summer solstice and that the next two weeks are used for the celebration of Sant Joan. This would mean that all of theĀ  young people are on holiday and exams have been completed.

The other major concern regards the level of violence and unruly behaviour which took place this year. The Local Police had to intervene in about 100 cases of young people behaving in an unacceptable way. There was also an unacceptable amount of vandalism in the town during this fiesta plus skirmishes between rival groups of youths. Most of this was down to youngsters drinking too much alcohol.

There are those who are asking for the two week period to be reduced as the noise that is caused disturbs everyone night after night. It appears that it is the youth associations which cause the most trouble and it is proposed that there should not be associations for young people below the age of 18 unless an adult is present.
