Last week the Spanish in Madrid turned out to demonstrate against the new abortion laws in Spain. It has been estimated that a million people turned up at the demonstration. They waved flags and carried placards saying”Every Life Matters”
The government is making radical changes to the existing abortion laws and this decision has brought together more than 40 religious groups plus civil society groupsĀ calling for the draft bill to be withdrawn.
The event was organised by the Spanish family Forum. The director of the Forum has said that this will not end until there is not a single abortion. This gentleman was in the former PP government with Jose Aznar as Prime Minister.Sr Aznar attended the demonstration too.
Abortions were decriminalised in 1985 but was only permitted in cases of rape or foetal malformation,or when the mother or child is at risk.Victims of rape can have an abortion up to week 12 of the pregnancy.A seriously malformed foetus can be aborted up to week 22.Most of the 100,000 abortions permitted in Spain each year are done on “psychological risk grounds”
The new legislation would allow abortions up to week 14 of the pregnancy and would allow 16 year olds to have an abortion without parental consent. The bill will be debated later this year.
