A residential building collapsed in the centre of Palma de Mallorca on the island of Mallorca last week.The three storey block of flats is said to be about 50 years old.It collapsed just after midnight.Seven people died ,four men and three women.One of the females was a 16 year old girl.Two others were seriously injured and two less seriously.
Other buildings nearby were also damaged and the police needed to evacuate about 50 people from all of them.Residents say that they heard a loud explosion before the block of flats fell to the ground.These flats were home to four families.The residents had been complaining about the state of the building for a long time.A gas leak has been ruled out by the local gas supplier.
The operation was a big one and more than 150 emergency services personel took part in the operation.Eventually the search for bodies was called off as all of those who had lived in the building were accounted for.There will now be a full investigation by the Palma authorities.
