Murcia Dune Protection

Volunteers in Murcia’s La Manga del Mar Menor and the salt marshes in San Pedro del Pinatar are working together to protect and replant the sand dunes in the region. They are also giving advice on the protection of other flora and fauna. There will be campaigns to inform visitors about the fragility of these environments.

The volunteers are from Artemia and Eusimonia schemes and they work with the ecologists association ANSE..Last weekend they planted bushes and native endangered species in the area. The plants had been grown in the ANSE greenhouses in Cartagena.

The volunteers are participating in other schemes involving bird ringing ,making a census of birds ,plants and reptiles living in the park. The president of ANSE has stated that it is so important to find a sustainable way of to manage development rather than use the present one which is more destructive. There must be alternatives or the Mar Menor will not survive.

Soon after this speech it was announced that a massive complex of 5000 homes,,luxury hotels, shopping areas, two 18 hole golf courses and other things were to be built near Los Urritas. However this is not a certainty and it is possible that there have been certain irregularities in the permission given for this development.
