“Catch and Release” is the idea behind a new 2009-10 fishing scheme in Murcia.A stretch of the River Segura has been designated for the scheme by the regional agricultural department.
“El Olivarejo”by the Virgen de la Esperanza sanctuary in Calasparra has been especially adapted and 31 fishing platforms have been installed. The work has cost just over 100,000 euros and has included clearing plants, excavation, stonework, restoration, cleaning and signposting.
The director general of natural heritage and biodiversity has said that this should ease the pressure on areas in more sensitive areas ,like the natural spaces at Canaverosa and Almadenes. It should also satisfy the growing demand of fishermen due to the scarcity of suitable areas for competitive fishing. This allows a sustainable use of fish resources while still conserving the species.
