Malaga’s Phoenicians

Construction work at Malaga airport has uncovered the oldest Phoenician remains ever discovered in the area.A full report of the discoveries is going to be given to a conference in Tunis next week.

The site covers more than 3 hectares in an area known as La Rebanadilla on the right side of the River Guadalhorce, where the remains have been buried for hundreds of years.Four phases of occupation have been identified which date between the eighth and seventh centuries  BC.This makes them the oldest discoveries ever found here.

The first phase consists of some large buildings where bronze is believed to have been produced. Then there are walls and yellow floors made from sun dried mud.Ceramics from other Mediterranean countries have also been found there. The third phase discovered homes made of stone, while by the time of the fourth phase huts have been replaced by larger buildings.

The remains were uncovered when work was being done on the drainage system connected to the buildings of Malaga airport’s second runway. To protect these very important finds, the drainage system has been moved by 700 metres. The excavation of the site will be ongoing and a report will be given in Tunis in two weeks time.
