Elche Astronomy

Residents of Elche were stargazing last week when they gathered in the town centre  to look at the planet Jupiter and the moon. The Elche astronomy association had set up a numbr of telescopes in the town square outside the congress centre, permitting members of the public to observe jupiter, the planet discovered by Galileo.

The original discovery was made 400 years ago and with today’s modern lenses they were able to view the moon, the planet and its four satellites. The telescopes were modern replicas of the telescope used by Galileo at the beginning of the seventeenth century. There were about 2000 people in the square to experience their few moments of looking at the heavens .
