A British couple who were wanting to travel from Alicante to Benidorm for the day, hired a car and set off on their day out.It appears that they were caught speeding by the police and were asked to pay 98 euros to the officers in cash. They did not have this amount of cash on them but offered to pay by credit card. This was refused.
This couple then had to take a train back to Alicante and two taxi rides. The car was imponded by these officers and the recovery of the car also had to be paid. This happened 7 hours later. The car was actually towed away.
This cannot be a normal or even acceptable method of dealing with any road misdemeanor. In normal circumstances a fine is issued and is paid at a Post Office or a bank.Paying cash to a police officer is not the normal way of doing things in Spain. It would be interesting to know if these were real police officers.
