Spanish News-Speed Cameras

In January 2010 the Spanish Direccion General de Trafico (DGT) is planning to start issuing fines from its “average speed ” radar cameras.

Some of these cameras are already in use, although not yet issuing fines.A list of where these cameras have been installed will be issued before they are up and running. In the beginning they will be placed in dangerous tunnels like the Guadarrama on the Ap-6 between Madrid and Segovia. They will also be installed at other traditional blackspots.

At the moment they are undergoing a series of tests .They will measure distances of between 1 and 5 kilometres .They will measure the average speed between two points, take a photograph of the driver and also the number plates. If the average speed recorded is higher than the speed permitted then a fine will be issued.

All of the sensors of these cameras are inter-connected and consequently they cannot be fooled by changing lanes .They work equally well by day or night thanks to laser lighting. They will be signposted in the same way as fixed radar cameras. They cannot be neutralised by illegal anti-radar devices either. The technology will eventually be used to find those who jump the red traffic lights.Fines will be issued and four points lost from the license.
