On October 19 2007 Alejandro Ponsoda the Mayor of Polop was gunned down outside his home in Xirles .He died 8 days after the shooting in an Alicante hospital.
The Guardia Civil have now arrested one Spaniard in connection with the murder.He is a 34 year old and was arrested in Alatera.After his appearance in court he was held in custody without bail.His role in the murder is not totally clear .It is possible that he acted as an intermediary,acquiring guns and the like.
The police are now looking for two other men believed to be foreign.They think that they were professional hit men.One is possibly Czech.The murder is thought to have been sought because the Mayor was in opposition to some building plan which had been proposed for the area.
