The Royal society for St George has held a competition to raise money for the Help the Heroes campaign in the UK.

Their aim was to focus on local English speaking schools ,getting them to focus on what it means to be a “hero” and to write about their own heroes..Laude,Lady Elizabeth School,in the Jalon Valley, had the best response .The school felt that it was a golden opportunity to get the young people to focus on the issues faced by soldiers  and airmen returning from a war zone with often horrific injuries.

They received over 100 entries and in the 14 years category the winner wrote about Mark Goffeney who plays the guitar with his feet as he was born without arms .Michael Hopkins, who won the prize felt that this guitarist was an inspiration and has made an enormous contribution to society .By just inspiring one person it is possible to make a difference. The winner in the “up to 14 “category was a 12 year old who wrote about Simon Weston who was badly burned during the Falklands war.Other heroes who were written about were Princess Diana,Lance Armstrong and JK Rowling. The winners received a book token from Bookworld Espana.
