Griffon Vultures in Orihuela Costa

The griffon vulture is an endangered species and consequently you don’t expect to look out of your window and see one resting on a roof nearby. However that is just what did happen in Orihuela Costa last week.It is thought that the five birds might have come from a feeding station near Alcoy. They have around 100 birds there and sometimes they do wander when food becomes scarce. Two of these birds were quite wak from malnutrition.

It was the local police who became involved and trapped the birds without harming them. They were not difficult to catch as they were so weak. The vultures were taken to a rescue centre at Alfaz del Pi.Staff there identified the birds as juveniles and said that they had needed food.In Spain the population of these vultures stands at about 34,000.
