Sixty thousand paper bags are to be given out free to customers at the Alicante municipal markets.Stalls at the markets have already started to distribute them. This is being done in an attempt to get people to realise the importance of not using plastic bags.
The scheme has been made possible because of an agreement between Bolsalea and the Municipal Markets Stallholders Association. It is a pioneering scheme in Spain. The scheme benefits both the stallholder and the clients .The customer doesn’t have to pay more to buy bags for their shopping and the stallholders don’t need to buy bags for the client as they are already paid for by advertising.
As of 2010 the plastic bag which is only used once and is not biodegradable, will be banned.Hopefully there will then be 50% less of them in the environment thanks to the national Spanish Residues Integrated Plan.
