Denia is a small town on the coast of the Costa Blanca. It has a new hospital on the outskirts of the town. The hospital is a State hospital but it is managed by a private company Marina Salud. In the beginning ,when it opened ,it had a great deal of bad press.People do not seem to realise that all transition involves difficulties of one sort or another.
Our experience has been a very positive one.The hospital is new,so everything within it is new and pristine. The test will be in the way in which the building and the equipment is maintained and replaced as and when it wears out. The staff are excellent in terms of their skills. However there is a great deal of reliance on families to do the “caring” bit of the nursing process. This is fine if you have a family but many do not have those who can sleep in the hospital and “fetch and carry” for the patients.
I have been helping to give a bed bath, feed, generally keep the room tidy and inform when things have run out ,such as water ,drips or when bags are full from drains. This is fine because I am interested in such things but many might feel it is a responsibility that they do not want to have.I think that it does help the recovery of the patient when they have a familiar face with them for most of the day and night but it is a stress for the family too.
