Costa Blanca News-Civil War

In an Alicante prison on the Costa Blanca the poet Miguel Hernandez was sentenced to death on January 18 1940 by the Permanent War Council during the Spanish Civil War.The sentence was later commuted to a 30 year life sentence .However the poet died in 1942 ,in prison.

His family is still fighting the injustice of what happened ,despite the many years which have passed by.They are wanting both the trial and the sentence to be revised and the death sentence to be permanently annulled. This was backed by the socialist party and now the PP party has also given its support for the initiative. It is also hoped that several local councils will also support the requests from the family.

The poet was born in Orihuela and the Mayor of Orihuela has already given her support.Next year will be the 100th anniversary of the birth of Alicante’s most famous poet.
