Javea Cemetery

The cemetery in Javea is causing some controversy amongst the council and the opposition parties. The old and disused niches in the cemetery are being demolished .Some of the stonework making up these burial niches were of local stone, cut by hand in 1817.A local stonemason has said that thesae pieces of stone are valuable, possibly 18 euros each and there are over 1000 stones. It appears that they are being dumped as though they have no value.

The opposition has made a complaint that the stones are being stolen by people who are either building or renovating properties and that the council is doing nothing to prevent it .It is claimed that the stones are being dumped in an open field ,mixed with other waste materials. It is also claimed that there are bones amongst the rubble, one assumes that these are human.Quite understandably the councillor says that these stones should have been saved, numbered, stored somewhere safe and then used in future council building programmes.
