Alcoy council,near Alicante ,has announced its plans to reduce its staff by 30 to 35 civil servants to save about 1.5 million euros a year.This would make Alcoy the first council in Alicante Province to prune its staff and only the second in the Valencia region as a whole.
In Alcoy there is a budget deficit of around 4.2 million euros .This is based on the money coming in and the money going out Consequently there is no choice but to cut costs.The council is also considering a cut in the refuse collection services.They are looking at the possibility of collecting rubbish every two days instead of daily.Cuts in the transport services are also being considered.
Alcoy is not the only town which is working on a deficit.Campello also has a 4 million euro deficit as a result of the problems in the construction industry.
